WHO WE ARE & OUR STORY

The Birmingham Game Music Ensemble (BGME) is an orchestra specialising in the performance of video game music arrangements. Based at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, the ensemble is made up of current and recent Conservatoire students and graduates. It was founded in September 2024 by composer Vinícius Motta, alongside chief conductor Tommaso Nista. What began as an 11-piece ensemble for a recording project module in October 2024, quickly grew into a 30-piece chamber orchestra, driven by strong interest from students across the Conservatoire. As the ensemble expanded, core members Gemma Cowieson (piano) and Matilda Fox (flute) joined the leadership team, helping run BGME alongside Motta and Nista.

OUR MISSION

We aim to bring new audiences into the concert hall through immersive, high-production performances. Our concerts are for everyone, but if you’re a gamer, you’ll feel an extra connection to what we do. Our musicians and arrangers have played the games we perform; we understand their narratives, their social impact, and their soundworlds, and we bring that understanding into every performance.

This isn’t just brilliant musicianship from some of the most talented students and recent graduates of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, though it is that too. It’s watching the ensemble transform. One moment they’re channelling the ghostly menace of Davy Jones’ Locker, growling pirate phrases in the presence of grog. The next, they’re embodying dragon slayers, letting the raw power of the human voice carry the weight of battle. Instruments are pushed beyond convention to conjure eerie, otherworldly textures; and in a heartbeat, the whole ensemble becomes a village of blocky NPCs, filling the hall with the unmistakable grunts, hisses and noises of villagers, spiders, and zombies from your favourite cube-world game. We live it, we breathe it, and we bring it to you: fully, joyfully and immersively.

A PLATFORM FOR STUDENT DEVELOPMENT

For our Conservatoire students, BGME is a platform for close collaboration across departments: performance, music technology, and composition departments. For our performers, it’s a chance to play repertoire they might not otherwise get to perform, while developing their contemporary classical and experimental performance skills whilst engaging with composers and arrangers collaboratively. For our music tech students, it’s an opportunity to join the production team and take on professional-level concert production roles, gaining orchestral recording experience in both studio and live settings, something rarely available elsewhere. For our composition students, it’s a chance to write and develop large-ensemble creative arranging and writing skills, with mentorship from our creative director along the way.

BGME is also a core part of Motta’s PhD research, which explores how contemporary classical techniques and experimental music practice can be woven into video game music arranging to enhance audience immersion in the concert hall. When you come to one of our concerts, you’re not just hearing your favourite game tunes; you’re stepping into an experience that draws on the music and everything that surrounds it, reimagined into something unique and powerful.
