About

Vinícius Motta is a Brazilian- British composer, arranger, performer, concert videographer, educator and gamer based in Birmingham. He is a genre-fluid composer specialising in concert hall music, including solo, chamber and orchestral music, as well as opera.

In his compositional practice, Vinícius primarily explores timbre and performers’ autonomy within a collective, often incorporating controlled aleatoricism and open performance directions. In essence, he challenges ensemble hierarchy by treating a group of musicians as individual soloists who happen to be sharing the same space rather than a unit. His works have earned recognition through performances by major ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Swan, Quatuor Bozzini, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, rough for opera, and most recently, Alpesh Chauhan (conductor. Notable venues where his works have been performed include Symphony Hall (Birmingham), St John’s Smith Square (London), the CBSO Centre (Birmingham) and the Chelsea Theatre (London).

He is the founder and principal arranger of the Birmingham Game Music Ensemble (BGME), a 30-piece orchestra conducted by Tommaso Nista, dedicated to video game music arrangements. The ensemble fosters new audiences while integrating experimental and contemporary classical music techniques and practices to enhance audience immersion during high-profile concert performances. He is currently a PhD researcher at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, investigating how contemporary classical techniques and experimental music practice can be incorporated into video game music arranging at the concert hall, in order to enhance audiences’ experiences.

He won the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Orchestral Composition Prize in 2024 and was also awarded the prestigious Musicians’ Company Silver Medal in 2024, the oldest UK award for excellence in conservatoire studies. He received the highly competitive Countess of Munster Musical Trust Postgraduate Composition Award in 2024/25. He is currently a composer within the Musicians’ Company Young Artists Programme.

Vinícius is also a concert videographer and producer, having filmed and produced several successful concerts and student projects over the last four years. He regularly works with composer, videographer and photographer James Sharif, filming concerts and recording sessions — from solo recitals and studio sessions to large orchestral productions. Alongside his production work with the Birmingham Game Music Ensemble, highlights include Michelle Amezcua’s México Mágico, Matilda Fox’s Mother Heroic: A Celebration of Björk’s Music, among other productions.
